Will I be all alone on the island?
Yes, you will have your own private islands during your stay - nobody else will be there, except our two resident cats Kira and Machi.
How will I get there?
We will pick you up in Puerto Asese when you check in and take you to the islands. The island is only a couple of minutes from the port. When you checkout, we will take you back from the island to the port. Transportation at check-in and check-out is included in the price of your stay.
Is there a refrigerator to cool our food and drinks
There is a small refrigerator available on the island where you can keep your food cold. The refrigerator is a solar powered large ice-chest. It's hooked up to a large battery so it should never run out of power. In addition to the refrigerator, there is a large ice chest available as well. We will make sure the ice chest has ice in it when you arrive.
Can I prepare food on the island?
Yes, we have an small outdoor kitchen and a large grill with separate burner that can be used for cooking. Please keep the grill clean when using it.
Where can we eat if don't want to cook?
There are several options close by. Villa's Mombacho has good food and a beautiful view of Lake Cocibolca. Be advised that Villas Mombacho's kitchen closes at 7PM. Don Ceviche is another good option. This place is mostly popular for cocktails and appetizers and get's really busy on weekends. Don Ceviche closes at 10PM.
To get to and from the restaurants you can use the kayak's provided on the island, or you can call Oscar and he can take you there by boat ( $6/C$200 fee - pay directly to Oscar).
Granada has many excellent restaurants (link). Oscar can take you to Puerto Asese and a taxi can pick you up from the port to take you to town. Phone numbers for taxi's in Granada can be found here.
If you speak a little Spanish, you can always order takeout at El Nectar ( la Calzada) - they can deliver to Puerto Asese and Oscar can pick it up for you ( for a small $6 fee). A copy of El Nectar's menu can be found on the island.
Can we use the kayaks and the paddleboard?
Yes, use of the kayaks and the paddleboard is included in your reservation. You can use these to paddle around the isletas (a magical experience around sunset), or go to the mainland to grab a bite to eat.
When you get to the ports, just leave your kayak on land - they are clearly marked with the Isla Mirabel name - the locals won't steal them.
There are a couple of monkeys on islands nearby. There is one island with a white-faced capucin monkey and another island is home to a spider monkey. Do not kayak too close to these islands, tourists feed these monkeys all the time and if they see people they are expecting food. The little one has jumped on boats before and starting acting really crazy - we think the little capucin monkey is a little deranged. The spider monkey is a lot more chill - but I would not get too close to him either.
Is it safe to swim in the lake?
Yes, we swim in there all the time and our kids have a lot of fun swimming in the lake. A lot of the locals are fishermen and you'll see them fishing and swimming in the lake early in the morning and in the evening.
No crocodiles have ever been spotted on this side of the isletas.
Is there electricity on the island?
Yes, the island is powered by a solar system and battery. The battery should typically have enough charge to provide power throughout the night, but on a cloudy day please try to conserve power as much as possible.
In general, it's good practice to turn off anything you're not using, remember you're off grid.
Can I drink the water?
We well provide drinkable water on the island, do not drink the wafer from any of the faucets.
Are the cats friendly?
There are two cats living on the island. Their names are Kira and Machi. Kira is all brown and is partially blind (she was mistreated as a kitten and has lost most of her sight, that is why her eyes look strange). She is very affectionate and will come to you.
Machi is the brown-white cat and is a little more shy. We feed them regularly and Oscar takes good care of them. If you want to give them some extra food, there should be a bag of food in the house. Kira and Machi very happily live outside and should not be in the house.
If you don't see them or only see one - don't worry, they have a lot of hiding spots on the island.
Does anything dangerous live on the island?
The island is very safe. You are in the middle of nature, so you might encounter some creepy looking critters - but there is nothing that will bite you on the island - except maybe some mosquitos when the sun goes down.
